Turbosmart’s Patent Pending, eWG60 is a fully electronic actuated wastegate – Built on the successful, class-leading GenV PowerGate60 architecture, now with the kind of control never seen before. The eWG60 PowerGate60 is a 60mm Electronic External Wastegate that uses full electronic control without the limitations associated with traditional pneumatic control.

Starting with a Turbosmart’s GenV wastegate body, you can be confident the mounting orientation will match your existing manifold and outlet hardware. The GenV PowerGate60 already had class-leading flow capacity and heat handling characteristics. Now featuring the Turbosmart Patent Pending eWG actuator system, you can also be sure of unparalleled control. 

There are no springs, no hoses, no boost reference signal, nor any associated limitations. Gone are ‘Minimum’ boost levels associated with base spring pressure or heat-related issues with hoses. If your manifold priority is good enough, you can set your boost anywhere from zero up to ‘All of it’ – All from your laptop or tuning interface. The eGate range requires a Dual Half-Bridge input for control, much like how an electronic throttle body is controlled and the strategy is as good as your imagination and your ECU or controller will allow.

Why would you want an electronic Wastegate?
The answer is simple: Options. An Electronic Wastegate doesn’t care about the turbo pressure you are generating and it doesn’t use it to control boost like a pneumatic system. Rather, the gate position is independent of boost meaning it can be exactly where you want it at any time. It can be predictive rather than responsive and the tuning window is not limited by the base spring pressure that is fitted to the gate because there are none. If you want to command the gate wide open at idle, you can – It’ll do whatever you want it to. Always.
How do I control an eGate?
You will need a Dual Half Bridge Output from your ECU, which is the same output you would normally use for an electronic throttle body. Unlike an electronic throttle, however, the current demands are higher and you will need to check with your ECU if it is suitable. If it is not, some companies produce suitable and matching H-bridge expanders that are suitable, alternatively, Turbosmart produces the BlackBox, which is a Dual Channel Electronic Wastegate Controller which can take either a traditional PWM input, or work with more advanced strategies via CAN.
How Fast is it? Is it fast enough?
72mm per second – Full travel can be achieved I 290ms. It’s fast. Please note, with the right strategy and hook-up method you can have a pneumatic gate respond faster, however, all data we have seen shows the eGates are more than fast enough to control boost on virtually all real-world boost control applications.
How much Boost Can it make?
Wrong question. You should be asking how much drive pressure can the gate close against, because that is the only limitation of the eGate. It doesn’t care how much boost you make; its job is to control the gas flow around your turbocharger and handle the driving pressure you produce.
How much Drive Pressure Can it handle?
The same Electronics are used for all GenV eGate and because the valve diameter differs through the range the answer is different per gate. The eWG60 can drive home against 80PSI of drive pressure while the eWG40 can drive home against 160psi and do so at full speed. Your drive pressure will be a result of how hard you are pushing your turbo with 1:1 (Drive pressure to boost pressure) common on efficient applications, however, the drive pressure ratio does increase once you are pushing your turbo harder and closer to the edge of its efficiency.
Can I use this instead of C02?
Yes, you can. It’s one of the situations that an eGate would be ideal for. You won’t need C02 or compressed Gas in your vehicle, so won’t forget to refill it or turn it on before staging. You will however have a gate that will do exactly what you tell it to, without any of the extra hardware and weight.
