Ensure you have an over-boost cut-out. This is a safety feature built into basically all factory, aftermarket & programmable ECU’s. You can never be too careful. Make sure it is set at a sensible & reasonable limit. Increasing the boost will put more load on your engine and there are other tune related factors you must consider. If in any doubt, speak with a professional tuner / calibrator.
What is a StraightGate?
The Turbosmart StraightGate is an external wastegate which uses a zero-offset butterfly style valve to control boost. Unlike traditional poppet style wastegates which need to turn the exhaust gas around through 90 degrees, the StraightGate does not & as such is far more efficient. StraightGate’s for a given valve size, will flow considerably more than a poppet style gate because of this improvement in efficiency.
What is an electronic wastegate?
Turbosmart electronic wastegates are 100% electronically actuated by way of a servo motor and patented zero-backdrive gearbox. There are no boost reference hoses, no springs and no diaphragms in the Turbosmart eGate range which means your boost control strategy is no longer reliant on them. Instead, you have full control under all circumstances, where traditionally you would have a base spring pressure which would limit your boost window from roughly base spring pressure to around 2-3 x base spring pressure. This is not the case with electronic control, as you can dial in completely open or closed, independent of any reference signal or spring.
What is Zero-Backdrive?
Zero-Backdrive is the technology contained within the gearbox of the Turbosmart range of eGates. This design feature means when there is no power being applied to the gate, there will be no movement. This has been designed and validated to 100’s of psi to ensure the wastegate won’t move, unless it is commanded to. This was a critical aspect of the eGate range as it meant we could keep overall power consumption down against even the highest drive pressure attempting to force the gate open. And when the power isn’t needed to hold the gate still, it can be used to drive home against it when required. This feature allows poppet style wastegates incredible stability against high drive pressures and equally useful on the StraightGate range where it still benefits stability and control.
How fast are the StraightGate’s?
Fast. Full Valve Actuation can be achieved in 63ms.
What do I need to do to control it?
You will need a programmable ECU (Engine Control Unit) and a ‘High Current’ (20 Amp) output H-Bridge output. This can be done on some ECU’s (speak with your manufacturer) or, via an external H-Bridge module. The Turbosmart BlackBox is available as an external driver which can be controlled via recalibrated / programmable factory ECU’s (Via traditional PWM boost control output) or with a programmable aftermarket ECU via PWM, 0-5v Analogue output or with CAN-based override.
Can I rotate the Actuator Housing?
Yes. There are 3 clocking options to choose from. The valve body itself is also rotatable on the V-band axis and is non-directional so you have huge flexibility with fitment.
